European Parliament backs mercury ban |

The European Parliament has voted massively in favour of a non-binding resolution supporting the EU Commission’s strategy for tackling pollution from mercury.
Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) called for an export ban to be put in place as soon as 2010, one year earlier than initially proposed within the strategy. They also supported measures to enforce safer mercury storage by the chlorine-alkali industry and to apply the ‘polluter pays’ principle in cases of pollution from the toxic heavy metal. ... more

SHV Holdings, the Dutch owner of well-known metal recycling companies David J. Joseph Company (DJJC) in the USA and the TSR Recycling (TSR) in Europe, has announced its intention to sell the latter.

US Navy to sink aircraft carrier |

The US Navy is having a hard time getting rid of its old ships - and so it is planning to sink more of them.
For a long time, unwanted ships have been destined for shipbreakers’ yards. However, this activity is now considered potentially harmful to the environment if carried out in the old-fashioned way, and too expensive if performed in an environmentally and politically acceptable way. One possible solution for the US Navy is therefore to sink old ships in order for them to serve as an underwater reef and a home for aquatic creatures.

In its 25th year, ELG Haniel Metals Ltd of the UK has received the Queens Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. The honour was confirmed on the occasion of the Queen’s 80th birthday on April 21.
ELG is the largest recycler of stainless steel secondary raw materials in the UK and supplies high-quality raw material feedstock to both domestic and overseas stainless steel mills. The company handles over 150 000 tonnes per annum, generates a turnover in excess of £160 million, and employs over 125 people.

Mayfran International’s manufacturing and engineering services have expanded into China with a 37 000 square foot plant in Shanghai. Tsubakimoto Mayfran Conveyor (Shanghai) Ltd is Mayfran’s sixth manufacturing facility, the others being in the USA, The Netherlands, Japan, Korea and India. The new facility, located in Shanghai’s Jiading Industrial Zone, operates in partnership with the Japanese operation, Tsubakimoto Mayfran. Its initial focus is on manufacturing large-scale stamping scrap conveyor systems, and conveyors and separators for machine tools.
* Cronimet
Cronimet Holding, which has its headquarters in Karlsruhe, Germany, has successfully concluded the acquisition of Metalloy Metall-Legierungen (MML) of Norderstedt, Germany. Taking over the entire shareholding of Joachim B. Stapelfeldt and of Chicago-based Keywell LLC, Cronimet now holds 89.47% of MML shares. Wendt Corp. of Tonawanda, New York, USA, has concluded the first two sales of its 130 Heavy shredder line to Camden Iron & Metal of Camden, New Jersey, and Sturgis Iron & Metal Inc. of Elkhart, Indiana.
