No liquid rheostats needed with SPR

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

April 01, 2007. Industrial systems manufacturer Quad Plus Inc. of Chicago, Illinois, USA, has developed the so-called Slip Power Recovery (SPR) drive to replace liquid rheostats in automobile shredders. This system increases a shredder’s productivity, lowers energy costs and reduces maintenance, according to Quad Plus. At the same time, it adds, the system eliminates the need for a cooling tower as well as capacitors, and does not require the maintenance associated with a liquid rheostat. Liquid rheostats are commonly used to start and control large AC wound rotor motors but SPR drives carry out the same functions more efficiently, says Quad Plus. The drives can improve productivity by keeping the motor speed near to its synchronous speed throughout load hits. The speed drops when the motor current reaches a pre-defined limit but recovers faster with a SPR drive compared to a liquid rheostat, Quad Plus contends. An SPR drive also regenerates the energy it consumes such that the energy can be sold bac ... more

Belonging to the MT product line, it weighs 20 tonnes and delivers 2100 tonnes of force with the Shear Jaw Set which boasts a 107 cm throat depth and a similar size of jaw opening. Using Allied-Gator’s speed circuit technology, the MTR 160 offers 360 deg of continual rotation and a cycle time of six seconds close and five seconds open at 225 gpm. Patented Quick-Change Jaw sets eliminate time-consuming shaft removal and never require hub adjustments, according to the manufacturer. It is said to take an operator just 15 minutes to switch jaw sets in the field. The MT Shear Jaw Set is used for processing heavy structural steel and scrap metal. It also features weld-on interchangeable solid and disposable shear tip options. The MT cracker/crusher jaw set processes reinforced concrete and heavy cast materials; it opens to 185 cm and has a throat depth of 128 cm. ... more
Sorting by speech recognition

April 01, 2007. Valvan Baling Systems, a Belgium-based baling and sorting equipment supplier, has launched a new system featuring a speech recognition module for automated sorting of textiles. The sorting line offers a 30-50% increase in capacity compared to traditional table sorting, predicts Valvan. The Belgian manufacturer has installed the new system at textile processor Eurofrip, which is located at Zulte in Belgium; the same customer has also ordered a second line for later this year. Unsorted goods are electronically labelled; the sorter gives information to a voice recognition system, thus consigning ‘throwing’ to the past, according to Valvan. With this new concept, the sorter drops the item on to a small conveyor belt beside the sorting table. From there, conveyors and blowing units take over. Many European companies are considering relocating sorting operations to lower-wage countries, notably in Asia. However, both Valvan Baling Systems and Eurofrip believe that maximised automation w ... more

China depends on fibre imports

April 01, 2007. China accounted for around 50% of global recovered paper trading volumes last year. According to the China Technical Association of Paper Industry, the country produced around 64 million tonnes of paper last year and consumed some 35 million tonnes of recovered paper, of which nearly 55% was derived from imports. Concern over quality is one of the reasons why China cannot rely on its domestic recovered paper supply, says the association. By contrast, imports from the USA are more easily recycled, more popular with the mills and, in many instances, cheaper than local recovered paper. This reliance on imports has made China more sensitive to changes in the international market price and more exposed to global supply fluctuations, according to the association. China is expected to publish its National Standards for Waste Paper Recycling in the near future. This will provide a management and classification mechanism which should lead to a significant improvement in domestic recovered pap ... more

Treatment specifications for cooling appliances

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

April 01, 2007. The household appliance industry (represented by CECED), electro scrap take-back schemes (WEEE Forum) and specialist electronics recyclers (EERA) have agreed on a set of specifications with respect to the collection, transportation, storage and treatment of end-of-life household cooling and freezing appliances containing hydrocarbons (HC). Since the mid-1990s, HCs such as butane, propane and pentane have almost completely replaced ozone-depleting gases such as CFC (chlorofluorocarbon), HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) and HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) which had been used as refrigerants and blowing agents for refrigerator foam insulation. The three organisations have developed the specifications because EU Directive 2002/96/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) does not specify how appliances containing HCs should be treated in the recycling process. HCs are flammable and so the aim has been to create a treatment specification that respects health and safety requirements. The ... more
China sends e-waste back to Japan

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

April 01, 2007. Environment officers in Hong Kong have intercepted the largest-ever haul of electronic waste found at the city’s busy container port. Loaded in eight containers on board a vessel from Yokohama in Japan, the material weighed 131 tonnes and comprised some 8000 television sets and computer monitors. Although its destination was listed as Hong Kong, such material often ends up on mainland China. Environment and customs officers intercepted the shipment at the Kwai Chung Container Terminal on February 12. With the consent of the shipping company and the Japanese authorities, the consignment was returned to Yokohama on another ship. The cargo had been declared in Japan as television sets and computer screens, but the import document quoted audio equipment and air conditioners. A random sample of some 100 items revealed that many had had their power cables cut and their shells removed. The haul included old TV sets dating back to 1993 as well as some manufactured as recently as 2005. Under ... more

April 01, 2007. A blueprint to improve the process of recycling obsolete vessels has been introduced in the UK with the aim of ensuring that government-owned and commercial ships are recycled to acceptable health, safety and environmental standards, particularly in developing countries. The UK has taken the decision to develop its own strategy rather than wait for the outcome of international negotiations since an agreement may not come into force for several years. Based on current estimates, some 30 Ministry of Defence vessels are scheduled to be withdrawn from operation by 2013 while around 400 EU-flagged commercial vessels will require recycling by 2010 in line with the phase-out of single-hull tankers. The UK strategy provides: * New guidance on the sale or recycling of government-owned vessels; * Recommendations for ship-owners clarifying the UK position on European and international obligations for the import and export of vessels; * Recommendations for recycling facilities including expanding c ... more

April 01, 2007. Australia-based scrap metal giant Sims Group Ltd has no intention of slowing its strategy of growth through acquisition in the electronics sector and has compiled a short-list of potential targets. However, Sims’ CEO Jeremy Sutcliffe says the company will ‘bed down’ recently-acquired electronics recycling businesses in the USA before continuing with its acquisition strategy. Sims has become the world’s largest electronics recycler following its acquisition of two businesses in North America: one is United Recycling Industries (URI) of Chicago, Illinois, but the name of the second business has yet to be disclosed. ‘We’ve got these to bed down - we’re very conscious of the fact that we don’t want to run before we can walk,’ he states. Mr Sutcliffe says the acquisition of the North American businesses puts the company in a strong position to benefit from any pro-recycling changes in legislation. He adds: ‘I’ve previously commented there is already a banning on the l ... more

April 01, 2007. Enormous business opportunities will be created in Asia once the region has implemented better policies to promote resource conservation and management. This was one of the conclusions of the 3R Workshop on Effective Management and Resource Use Efficiency in East and Southeast Asia which was organised jointly by the Asia Development Bank (ADB), the United Nations and the Institute of Global Environment and Society. The event took place in Manila, the Philippines. Asia's cities alone are generating 760 000 tonnes of solid waste per day, a figure that is expected to increase to 1.8 million tonnes by 2025. According to ADB's analysis, the waste management market - including environmental infrastructure and technology - is expected to grow at an annual rate of between 10% and 12%. "Decision makers have been reluctant to put in place measures to promote efficient use of resources because they believed it would hurt business or cause job losses", says Bindu Lohani, Director General of ADB's R ... more

March 01, 2007. Political unrest in Bangladesh has boosted the ailing Alang shipbreaking yards of India. Since late last year, a number of ships destined for breaking in Bangladesh have been diverted to Alang, providing the area with a much-needed fillip. A total of 10 ships arrived in November, 13 in December and a further 24 in January - the highest monthly tally in two years. In the five months to October last year, a mere 32 ships had arrived at Alang. According to the Alang port authorities, this spurt in business signals a positive change for the industry, ancillary units and thousands of workers. The positive trend is likely to continue in the coming months, it adds. Leading shipbreaker Hareshsinh Parmar, who operates two yards in Alang, suggests many international agents now prefer India to Bangladesh as a destination for obsolete ships. ‘As the political environment is not conducive in Bangladesh, traffic gets diverted to Alang,’ he explains. While Alang is receiving small and medium-siz ... more

March 01, 2007. In a position paper released in February, the European Engineering Industries Association representing the interests of the mechanical, electrical, electronic, metalworking and metal articles industries, has called on the EU to drop electronic waste recovery and recycling targets in favour of broader ‘environmental objectives’ offering companies more flexibility in achieving green goals. Known as Orgalime, the association was commenting to the European Commission review of the EU’s Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) which began in mid-2005. The directive had been implemented inconsistently across the EU and so it would be ‘premature’ to increase the current 4 kg per person per year collection target for 2008, according to Orgalime. The organisation is particularly keen to see harmonised registration and reporting requirements. ... more
Metal theft wave in Japan

March 01, 2007. Children’s slides, cemetery incense holders and even the roof of a public toilet have disappeared in a spate of metal thefts in Japan prompted by surging steel and copper prices. Last year, around 5700 such thefts took place in Japan causing damage worth some US$ 17.27 million (Euro 13.3 million) - and the frequency of incidents is said to be on the increase. Some 200 stainless steel incense containers were stolen from a cemetery in Kanagawa prefecture, south of Tokyo, in late February. And in the previous month in Kanagawa, thieves stole a copper roof from a public toilet. Also this year, thieves have stolen two stainless steel slides from parks in Saitama prefecture. Industry officials believe the metal was stolen to be sold as scrap to China in order to feed the construction boom ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. According to an official at the Japan Iron and Steel Recycling Institute, demand for scrap is strong both on the domestic market and in China, South Korea and T ... more
EuPC fears PET market distortion

To view the full details, ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND CLICK GO :

March 01, 2007. Europe’s PET converters will continue to face cost pressures thanks to a controversial decision by the European Council of Ministers to extend anti-dumping duties and anti-subsidy measures on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for another five years. EuPC, the Brussels-based body representing Europe’s plastics converters, claims elimination of these measures would have remedied long-standing market distortions caused by the artificially high level of raw material prices in the EU. It suggests that up to 80% of PET converters’ total costs are related to the purchase of raw materials. According to EuPC, PET converters are already at a cost structure disadvantage in relation to raw material producers. The latter enjoy relatively low labour costs because their production operations are almost completely automatic. In contrast, converters’ operations are more labour intensive due to the sequence and type of materials handling, processing and distribution activities involved. ... more
