The European plastics industry – comprising PlasticsEurope, EuPC, EuPR and EPRO – has published its 18th report on trends in production, demand and recovery of plastics called the “Compelling Facts about Plastics 2007”.

Survey: Electronics industry recycles |

Global | Nearly 70% of the world’s major electronics companies are actively recycling electronic products and components, according to the Consumer Electronics Association’s (CEA) environmental sustainability report.
CEA, which unites about 2200 electronics companies, asked 20 of the world’s largest consumer electronics companies -including Cisco, Dell and HP- about sustainability practices, from the internal processes of the company to manufactured end products. According to CEA, these top 20 companies make about half of the consumer electronics units in the global marketplace.
At least half the companies CEA interviewed were diverting 80% or more of their unusable materials from landfills and some diverted as much as 98%. They found more creative uses such as recycling the materials or selling them to partners who used them as feedstock in their own businesses. Sims suspends purchasing plans in Australia |

Sliding commodity prices and insecurity about the strength of the world economy are hitting home for local scrap metal merchants in Australia, with the world's biggest recycler Sims temporarily suspending purchases of non-ferrous metals.
Sims Group, based in Sydney, has told its local suppliers it will not buy the material while prices are so low to avoid on-selling at a loss. Jeremy Sutcliffe, Chairman of Sims' Australian and European metals operations, said the company's decision to stop buying non-ferrous metal was a short-term response to the price meltdowns. ... more

Copper scrap processor Norddeutsche Affinerie AG (NA) is to invest a further Euro 62.5 million in the expansion of the Kayser Recycling System (KRS) at its facility in Lünen, Germany.
Under the so-called KRS-Plus project umbrella, investments will include a second furnace, allowing the KRS to be switched from batch processing to continuous smelting. Some Euro 17 million of the total will be spent on waste gas purification plant and other environmental protection measures, according to NA.
