February 01, 2004. * Midrex Technologies Midrex Technologies, Inc. of the U.S. and Al-Ghaith Holdings in the United Arab Emirates have signed a pre-engineering contract to start work on a new mini-mill and Midrex Direct Reduction Plant using the industry’s first Hotlink system to feed hot direct reduced iron (HDRI) to the mill. The new facility, known as Hamil Steel, will be the Middle East’s newest electric arc furnace-based mini-mill and will produce approximately 300 000 short tons of steel billets per annum. HDRI will be delivered at over 700 degC to a newly-designed VAI/Fuchs electric arc furnace for the production of high-quality, low-cost liquid steel. The Hamil Steel DR/EAF venture will be the first in the world to utilise the patented and proprietary Hotlink technology. February 01, 2004. * JMC Recycling Systems JMC Recycling Systems Ltd of Nottingham, U.K., formed recently by the decision to split J.McIntyre Machinery Ltd into two new companies, has announced the sale of the company’s fourth consignment of equipment to the U.S. since the appointment of its Texas-based agent Strip Tec. The U.S. firm has been selling the McIntyre range of equipment since June 2003. Shipped in January, the latest dispatch will include 16 metal cleaning shears and three grabs. Since the formation of JMC from the long-established J.McIntyre Machinery Ltd in October last year, sales of metal shears and balers have boomed both in the U.K. and abroad, according to the company. JMC has also taken a number of orders for its Alpack can processing systems and has sold 12 grabs since their re-introduction to the McIntyre product range earlier this year. February 01, 2004. * CEPI Carl Björnberg, CEO of Myllykoski Corporation of Finland, has been appointed the new Chairman of the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). He succeeds Michael Gröller, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Mayr-Melnhof Karton, who had been CEPI Chairman for two years. Mr Björnberg joined Myllykoski in 1964 and became President in 1978. In 1996, he was elected Chairman of Myllykoski Paper and later that same year was elected a member of the board of Finnish forest industry group Metsäliitto. In addition, he has been Chairman of the Board of Finnish Chemicals since 1997 and of Karl Fazer Ab since 1999; he is currently a member of the board and executive committee of the Central Association of Finnish Forest Industries and also serves on the board of the Confederation of Finnish Industry and Employers.
