Following the Dutch government’s introduction of a tax on plastic packaging materials, the Nedvang packaging manufacturers and recyclers co-operative is launching a dedicated collection scheme.
By contracting globally-operating waste management firms such as SITA, Midwaste and Remondis, Nedvang plans to establish a network of 60 locations for the storage, separation and recycling of plastic packaging waste. According to Nedvang, this constitutes an important step towards raising the recycling rate from its current level of 22% to the government target of 38% for 2009. ... more

Omnisource to buy out Recycle South |

Steel producer Steel Dynamics Inc. says its recently acquired subsidiary Omnisource has agreed to buy the remaining interest in fellow US company Recycle South LLC in a cash and stock deal valued at about US$370 million to expand its recycled metals business.
Recycle South equity owners will receive about 3.9 million Steel Dynamics shares, which the company valued at about US$138 million, and US$232 million in cash. The companies value the deal at US$500 million, which includes US$135 million in debt and other liabilities. ... more

Germany Aluminium producer and recycler Novelis Inc will invest 11 million Euro (US$17.2 million) to expand production capacity at its plant in Nachterstedt, Germany, in response to growing demand in the automotive and beverage can end markets in Europe.

First quarter wood chip costs up almost 50% in western US, but pulpmills in the US South experienced only small upward price adjustments |

Pulpwood and wood chip costs were higher for many pulpmills in the US in the first quarter as reported in the latest issue of the North American Wood Fiber Review. This was mainly a result of the reduced supply of residual chips from the sawmilling industry, which has cut back production due to dismal lumber markets in 2007 and early 2008.
Although the costs for pulpwood and residuals have slowly declined in many regions of the US South during the past 12 months (softwood residuals being the exception), the total wood fiber costs for many pulpmills have remained unchanged or even increased as the percentage use of the more expensive roundwood chips has gone up. The cost of roundwood chips has typically been 30-50% higher than that for residual chips; thus, increasing the share of roundwood chips has resulted in higher average wood costs particularly for pulpmills that mainly have relied on residuals sawmills for their furnish. Pragati Papers Industries Ltd, a Delhi based paper producer, is putting up a Rs.5 billion (US$ 124 million) recycled waste-paper plant in Gujarat. According to Pragati, the plant, at Dahej in Bharuch district, is likely to be commissioned in 2010.
