While TOM CAT is located in a small Canadian village, the news of an ever increasing use of wood bats has reached us. Its use has even extended to Europe as evidenced by our bats going to Belgium and Switzerland…….so far. But this news represents a growing trend towards wood. Why?.....maybe it’s because wood teaches control, technique and better eye/hand co-ordination; leading, of course, to faster games, lower scores and more exciting baseball.
This year, we thought that we would expand into making Ash bats, mainly for those players who, as a tradition, won’t use anything else. Again, we had to ask: “Why?”.
We really believe in Maple as a superior wood from which to make a better bat. Also, we don’t like the nonsense associated with the choice of a good ash bat. For one thing, flaming an ash bat does nothing more than enhance the grain for aesthetic reasons- or, if carried to the extreme, will case harden the outer skin of the bat and lead to a more brittle wood. For another, wide grains indicate nothing more than a faster growing season and consequently, a softer wood. Look for the straightness of grain and more grains for a more durable bat
